Preconception Care: Why the 3 Months Before Pregnancy Matter Most

Preconception care is one of the most meaningful investments you can make when preparing to start a family. It’s a period that is often overlooked, yet it holds incredible potential to shape not only your fertility, but your overall health, pregnancy experience, and long-term wellbeing.

At Ochre, this stage is held with intention, and given the time and care it deserves. Our treatments are designed to support you to feel warm, nourished, and deeply held for every step of the way, both physically and emotionally.

What is Preconception Care? (& Why it Matters for Fertility)

Preconception care refers to the period of preparation before conception - when both egg and sperm can be actively supported and influenced through lifestyle, nutrition, stress regulation, and acupuncture.

This stage is not just about “getting pregnant faster”, but instead about improving the quality of the biological building blocks (egg and sperm). This allows us to create the conditions for healthy conception, a nourished pregnancy, a supported postpartum recovery, and the long-term health of your child.

Supporting your fertility during this time can help:

  • Improve egg quality and ovarian function

  • Support sperm health, motility, and DNA integrity

  • Balance hormones and menstrual cycles

  • Reduce early pregnancy risks

  • Support a healthier pregnancy and postpartum recovery

Why the 3 Months Before Conception Matter are Critical for Fertility

When it comes to fertility, timing matters more than most people realise.

We generally recommend allowing at least three months of preparation before trying to conceive. This aligns with natural reproductive physiology:

  • Egg maturation takes approximately 90 days.

  • Sperm development typically occurs over a 74-90 day cycle.

This means the lifestyle, nutrition, stress levels, and treatments you engage in today directly influences the eggs and sperm that will be involved in conception three months from now.

This window gives us time to meaningfully support reproductive health, of both men and women - improving hormone balance, circulation, nutrient status, and overall vitality before conception even occurs.

Rather than focusing solely on ovulation or embryo transfer, we place emphasis on the earlier phase - when some of the most important biological changes occur.

Whether you’re preparing for natural conception or IVF, this foundation remains essential.

So What Can I Do at Home?

What You Can Do Naturally to Support Egg Quality and Fertility (Yes, even after 30!)

Egg quality naturally changes over time, but it is not fixed or unchangeable. With the right support, we can positively influence the environment in which eggs mature. This is especially important for those conceiving later in life or preparing for IVF.

Evidence-informed ways to support egg quality include:

  • Nutrient-dense, warming foods to support blood and energy

  • Consistent, restorative sleep for hormonal regulation

  • Stress reduction to support the nervous system and ovulation

  • Acupuncture to improve circulation to the reproductive organs

  • Herbal and nutritional medicine (when appropriate)

Fertility acupuncture can play a key role in improving ovarian function and supporting cycle regularity during this window.

Male Fertility Matters! How to Improve Sperm Health Naturally?

Male fertility plays a significant role in conception, embryo development, and pregnancy outcomes. Sperm is advantageous in the way that it is continuously being produced. This means improvements can often be seen within one full cycle of development, when lifestyle and health are supported.

Ways to support sperm health include:

  • Improving sleep and reducing chronic stress

  • Avoiding heat exposure to the testes (hot tubs, laptops on lap)

  • Eating a nutrient-rich, whole food diet

  • Reducing alcohol, smoking, and recreational drugs

  • Supporting circulation and overall vitality with movement and acupuncture

Male factor fertility contributes to approximately 40-50% of fertility challenges, making it an essential part of preconception care.

5 Reasons Preconception Care Improves Fertility Outcomes

1) The earliest stages of life happen before you even realise you’re pregnant.

The first few weeks after conception are crucial for organ development - particularly the brain and spinal cord. Most people discover pregnancy after a missed period (around weeks 4-5), meaning major organogenesis has already occurred. Preconception care reduces developmental risks before conception happens, and helps ensure the body is in its most optimal state during this sensitive window.

2) Sperm health CAN be improved (despite what your doctor or specialist may say).

Paternal health before conception directly impacts fertilisation rates, embryo quality, and pregnancy success. It can affect embryo drop off at the day 3 mark, and it can also affect miscarriage rates once conceived. Research shows sperm counts have dropped 59% since 1973, with male factors accounting for 40-50% of fertility issues. It’s important not to forget about the other 50% of the piece, but encouraging to know that sperm health can improve significantly within weeks to months.

3) Women are having children later, and egg quality can be supported at every age.

While egg quality naturally changes over time, it is not fixed. As more women choose to conceive later in life, preconception care allows us to actively support reproductive health by optimising the eggs that are available and combat its natural decline with age. Preparing your body with nourishing warm foods, taking time to actively manage stress (hello acupuncture & gentle regular movement), avoiding overwork and making sure you rest can significantly enhance the eggs you do have, as they mature. Specific herbs and supplements can also be prescribed to you to further enhance this process.

4) Reducing everyday toxin exposure supports hormonal health.

Hormonal balance is highly sensitive to environmental factors. Simple, consistent changes can reduce overall toxic load over time - such as storing food in glass instead of plastic, and avoiding microwaving food in plastic containers.

We also encourage reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in everyday products. Unfortunately there is now a lot of green washing out there, so take your time to look into truly natural brands. For cleaning, we recommend and stock Koala Eco in clinic, because it actually works, smells great, and has no negative toxin load on our body. We are also mindful of the products that we use on our skin and everything it absorbs, as our largest organ. Making switches to natural skincare and sunscreen like Avocado Zinc (also now stocked in clinic) means you’re reducing the impact of toxins on your body, and there is less to change once you are pregnant!

This switch doesn’t have to be overwhelming, as products run out in your household, begin to source and switch to healthier alternatives.

5) Supporting underlying health reduces pregnancy complications.

When chronic or underlying health conditions are identified and managed early, pregnancy outcomes improve significantly. Preconception care can help reduce the risk of complications such as miscarriage, congenital abnormalities, foetal growth restriction, preterm birth, and metabolic complications. By addressing the foundations early, we give both body and baby the best possible starting point for a healthy pregnancy journey.

I Have Other Health Issues - Should I Prepare for Conception Earlier?

Short answer - yes, the more time the better to improve your health. It’s okay to start preconception care if you’re not exactly sure when you want a child, but just that you want one in the future. Simply letting your acupuncturist know that this is a future goal of yours means they can keep this in mind as they treat you. Often, if time and budget allow we still recommend weekly acupuncture sessions especially in the following cases below:

  • Hormonal dysregulation or thyroid dysfunction

  • Insulin resistance or metabolic imbalances

  • Inflammatory or autoimmune conditions

  • Chronic stress or nervous system dysregulation

  • Nutrient deficiencies

  • Recurrent pregnancy loss

  • Poor sperm parameters

  • PCOS, endometriosis, or diminished ovarian reserve

  • Irregular or anovulatory cycles
